The Roadmap To Civic Engagement
During the 2002-2003 term of service, Intermountain AmeriCorps member were fortunate to partake in a pilot program sponsored by Washington Service Corps entitled "Developing Citizenship Through Civic Engagement". This program was formulated to help youth and communities develop and define the following concepts:
Citizenship Development - Developing the skills, knowledge, dispositions and behaviors required to effectively support a democratic society.
Civic Engagement - Being actively involved in the public, civil and political affairs of the community.
Service-Learning - A method or strategy, which combines community service activities with intentional learning objectives and employs a reflective process.
Community Service - Activity provided to the community by a volunteer that provides a necessary service. Sometimes community service is associated with court-ordered mandatory service as part of an alternative sentencing for youth. This curriculum helps to show this is not always the case.
Experiential Education - Learning by doing.
Members are trained for this curriculum through Washington Service Corps trainings and through our project trainings. Our members have found enormous success with this curriculum and have had an enjoyable time delivering it to youth in their communities and sites. |
